From Start to Finish: A Life-of-Mine Perspective brings together the full life-cycle of responsible mining in one handy volume focusing on socioeconomic and environmental leading practice.  Selected presenters from the AusIMM’s 2016 Life-of-Mine Conference have developed their abstracts into full papers for this publication. Key papers have also been drawn from previous Life-of-Mine conferences and other selected events, with the authors invited to update their papers to exemplify the best Start to Finish thinking and achievement in 21st century mining.

Forum: Planning for post-mining land use in central Queensland

The aim of this Forum is to identify the land uses that the central Queensland community would like to see for post-mining lands, relevant issues to address, the process for converting land from mining back to other uses, and how local stakeholders may be engaged in the process. It will provide an opportunity for different stakeholders in end-of- mine planning to discuss the goals and processes to convert post-mining lands back to agriculture and other uses.

The results of two current ACARP projects will be provided in the forum, together with other industry and policy information. There will be ample time for open discussion, and morning tea and lunch will be provided.

The MCA hosts this workshop to promote leading practice. It is not for profit and structured to minimise travel costs and time out of the office.

Ethical Corporation have spoken to Rudolph Botha, Mine Closure Lead and the architect of Anglo American’s mine closure toolkit and have put together a summary of how Anglo-American - a leading extractives company - is addressing the risks to social license, reputation and community relations that project closure creates. The Minerals Council of Australia today released a new publication titled Mine Rehabilitation in the Australian minerals Industry showcasing the commitment by the industry to mine site rehabilitation so that previously mined land again becomes available for future economic activity, conservation or community use.

The publication demonstrates that the industry does not consider mine rehabilitation as something that begins towards the end of the project, but rather a process that begins right from the beginning of the mine project planning.

On the 3^rd and 8^th December workshops were held at the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) to update SMIs peers and those CQMRG members who could attend, on the progress and purpose of the MRC-wiki. Those participating were encouraged to think of what knowledge they could share and in what form it could be presented. Through both one-on-one and small group discussions, a number of additional wiki pages were written or commenced - even in some cases just as identified headings or themes but still a start. We will be following up with authors for completed pages.

The aim is to populate the wiki with some starting pages as examples, to help get the ball rolling.
