Ross Gooley graduated from UQ with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science in 1987. He filled various roles in government and directly in mining, including several overseas positions, but always with a land management and rehabilitation focus. In 2004, Ross worked as Environmental Superintendent at Saraji Mine and started to innovate with rock mulching for spoil rehabilitation as a technique to improve outcomes and reduce costs. Moving to Sojitz Minerva Mine in 2014, and later as Land Rehabilitation Manager for Sojitz Green, Ross continued to develop and implement improved rehabilitation practices until his untimely passing in 2022. Throughout his career, Ross saw himself as an enabler not a promoter. Humble and hard-working, Ross’s legacy is in the rehabilitation he undertook and in the environmental officers he mentored.

This award seeks to recognise the values exemplified by Ross – a meticulous and curious nature, a passion to improve rehabilitation outcomes and a willingness to share knowledge.

Nominations for this annual award are invited from or on behalf of anyone currently involved in mining rehabilitation in Central Queensland.

Please download the application form; available in both Word and PDF formats.

In October 2022, Stanmore hosted a workshop for 65 members of the Central Queensland Mining Rehabilitation Group ( CQMRG) at Moranbah, on behalf of South Walker Creek Mine. The theme of the workshop was ‘Partnerships and Collaborations’, which emphasised how mine planning and rehabilitation could be successfully achieved through maintaining strong partnerships and ongoing collaboration with key stakeholders including the local community, regulators, landholders and Traditional Owners.

As the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Moranbah stands, representatives from Barada Barna opened the workshop with a Welcome to Country. Attendees included representatives from the Department of Environment & Science and the Office of the Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner who gave updates on their respective activities. The CEO of Isaac Regional Council, Jeff Stewart-Harris PSM, shared his perspectives on sustainability for the Council and sparked a conversation about sustainable communities and Council's goals and objectives. The workshop also included a presentation by the Stanmore Green Business Manager on the company's sustainability practices and potential decarbonisation projects, and a discussion led by the Land Access Manager on building relationships.

NOTE: NOW POSTPONED TO 2022! The 12th International Conference on Acid Rock Drainage (12th ICARD) is taking place at The Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Brisbane, from 19th - 23rd September 2021. On behalf of the Organising Committee.

The theme of ICARD 2021 "Proactive measures and lasting outcomes" reflects that the sooner work starts on implementing a well-designed, effective ARD control strategy the more likely it is that there will be sustainable benefits. While the operational life of most mines is usually measured in years or decades, the effective life control strategies and remediation works have to be measured in centuries.
